Music Notes 2
Most sessions of the 90th Battlefords Music Festival are being held at the Dekker Centre. Band and instrumental sessions will be at the Kinsmen Band Hall. Sessions will be live-streamed allowing access beyond in-person.

THE BATTLEFORDS –The music festival committee is extending the deadline for entries to Jan, 29 with no late fee penalties. Many schedules have been impacted by COVID cases causing disruptions in teachers submitting entries, making it appropriate to be flexible.

The 90th annual Battlefords Kiwanis Music Festival is scheduled to run from March 20 to April 1 with the planned disciple dates of March 20 to 27 for piano/voice/musical theatre/speech arts, March 28 to 30 for band/instruments/strings, with the gala April 12. The entry fees are solo $1, duet/trio/small ensemble $15 and band/choir/large ensemble $30.

The committee offers a range of sponsorship options. Advertising space can be featured in the festival program, in print and online. If interested in sponsoring an adjudicated session, this will be recognized at the entrance of the venue and acknowledged in the virtual livestream. With any donation, there is recognition of being a “friend” of the festival with acknowledgment in the festival program and newspaper. To become a major gala sponsor, contact committee member Jaki Esquirol directly at [email protected]. To sponsor awards or scholarships, contact committee member Karen Ulmer at [email protected]. To volunteer, contact committee member Loralee Cawood at [email protected].

Most sessions are being held at the Dekker Centre. Band and instrumental sessions will be at the Kinsmen Band Hall. Sessions will be live-streamed allowing access beyond in-person.

Youth are invited to create artwork to be featured in the festival program and venues. As the festival marks it's 90th year, ideas that are ‘blasts from the past” and “flashes from the future,” perhaps incorporating the number 90, are encouraged. Deadline for submission is Feb. 18.

Submit entries by mail to:  Battleford Central School, Attn: Lindsay Charabin, Box 400. Battleford, S0M 0E0 or Ecole Monseigneur Blaise Morand, Attn: Trina Bahrey, 1651 - 96th St. North Battleford, S9A 0H7.

Many people were transported to nostalgic teen years memories with the passing of Meatloaf this past week. The epic “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” from the classic “Bat Out of Hell” album entered our worlds in 1977.

“Rock n' Roll came from the slaves singing gospel in the fields. Their lives were hell and they used music to lift out of it, to take them away. That's what rock n' roll should do take you to a better place.. The angels had guitars before they had wings.” –  Meatloaf (1947 – 2022)
