SASKATOON - The City of Saskatoon activated its Extreme Heat Emergency Response on Monday as temperatures are expected to reach the high 30s this week.

The Saskatoon Emergency Management Organization has issued an advisory for all outdoor enthusiasts, be it cycling, running, gardening, or engaging in outdoor sports, to prioritize hydration at all times.

The city’s 17 spray pads have been operational, and 30 paddling pools, especially in outdoor facilities, have been open since the summer heat kicked in. Some public outdoor pools even hold swimming lessons for kids and adults.

All spray pads' operation hours have been extended to 10 p.m. until Thursday, July 11. They open daily at 10 a.m. and are part of the more than 60 cool-down locations in the city.

The city has also released a list of cool-down stations, which are places for everyone to stay out of the extreme heat conditions. These stations benefit the vulnerable, like the homeless, as well.

The city has partnered with 13 other non-profit organizations, such as the Saskatoon Food Bank and Friendship Inn, to make their facilities cool-down stations. People can also cool down in the city's nine public libraries and six leisure centres.

Saskatoon Transit will assist anyone needing immediate shelter or contact emergency services through its Safe Bus Program. One can flag down a bus or go to a parked one.

Bus operators will call emergency personnel through its radio system as the person waits inside the vehicle.

The city also advises dog owners to keep their pets hydrated after a walk and not leave them inside cars with the windows rolled up.
