NORTH BATTLEFORD - For the first time since 2019, there will be a public pancake breakfast marking National Indigenous People’s Day in North Battleford.

The annual event put on by Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre, will return this Wednesday, June 21 between 8 a.m and 11 a.m. in the lot between 101st and 102nd Streets on 12th Avenue. The pancake breakfast is free of charge.

The event had been an annual one for years but was cancelled for the last three years due to COVID-19 pandemic concerns. News that the event is back on was confirmed at the City of North Battleford’s Planning Committee meeting by Councillor Kent Lindgren.

“We’re really happy to welcome the community back,” said Lindgren. “It’s a really great day, there’s entertainment and lots of really great food, and then there’s lots of other great events happening that day to follow up, so just invite everybody to that.”

This is just one of the many events happening on June 21 in North Battleford. Some of the other events happening that day in North Battleford include the raising and permanent installation of the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan flag at City Hall. That is happening at 10 a.m. that morning.

BATC is organizing a powwow at Western Development Museum starting at 11 a.m. that morning. The Battlefords Indian Metis Friendship Centre plans an Indigenous Day event celebrating the two-spirit LGBTQ-plus community from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m that day.

North Battleford Comprehensive High School is also holding an Indigenous People’s Day celebration from 12 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. There will be a student powwow, a demonstration of hoops dancing, and games. A full list of events happening in the city on June 21 will be put up on the City of North Battleford’s events calendar.
