Second degree murder charges laid after suspicious death in Grandmother’s Bay

Two youth have been charged in the death of George Roberts of Grandmother's Bay.

GRANDMOTHER'S BAY - On Oct. 8, 2021 at approximately 6:45 p.m., Stanley Mission RCMP attended a residence in Grandmother’s Bay after a report an occupant was unaccounted for.

Officers entered the residence and located a deceased male. He has been identified as 55-year-old George Roberts of Grandmother’s Bay. His family has been notified.

Investigation determined that Roberts’ death was suspicious in nature. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crime Unit South led the subsequent investigation with the assistance of the Stanley Mission RCMP, La Ronge RCMP, Prince Albert and Tisdale Forensic Identification Services, Saskatoon and Prince Albert Provincial General Investigation Sections, Major Crime Unit North and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

As a result of this investigation, two 16-year-old youths were arrested on Oct. 12. The youths can’t be named or identified publicly, as per Section 110 of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The youth are each charged with:

  • 1 count, second degree murder, Section 235, Criminal Code
  • 1 count, robbery, Section 344, Criminal Code
  • 1 count, break and enter and commit indictable offence, Section 348, Criminal Code

Both youth made their first court appearance in La Ronge on Oct. 14.
