Trial for woman accused of abducting baby adjourned to 2022

Tori Sutherland is charged with break and enter, assault, abduction of a child, and breach of a release order

MELFORT – A trial for a woman who allegedly abducted a four-month old baby boy is now set for June 2022 in Melfort Provincial Court.

Tori Sutherland, 26, is charged with break and enter, assault, abduction of a child, and breach of a release order.

Wakaw RCMP say they were investigating several disturbances on One Arrow First Nation Nov. 14, 2020, when they received a report that during one of the disturbances, a woman went into someone’s home uninvited, assaulted a woman and abducted an infant.

The infant was unharmed and reunited with his mother about 30 to 45 minutes later, say police. The baby was found at another residence on One Arrow First Nation. Wakaw and Rosthern RCMP arrested Sutherland more than a month later on Dec. 31, 2020.

Police say Sutherland knew the victims and no weapons were seen or used.

The trial was supposed to proceed in September but was adjourned. The charges against Sutherland haven’t been proven in court.

She was released on bail Jan. 7, 2021.
