The reigning Prairie Football Conference champion Regina Thunder have added Chris Getzlaf and Carter Gusway to the team's coaching staff.

Gusway joins the team as the new offensive coordinator, while Getzlaf, a two-time Grey Cup champion, will serve as an offensive consultant for the 2025 season.

Gusway joined the Thunder in 2024 as quarterbacks coach. Known for his methodical approach and high football IQ, Gusway has excelled on both sides of the ball, making him a versatile and innovative football mind. His ability to break down complex game strategies and maximize player performance has earned him respect at every level he’s coached, from high school to international and collegiate programs.

Gusway coached the St. Lawrence University receivers, which put up record-setting numbers in 2019, with single-season records in pass completions (271) and passing yards (3,301). His extensive coaching background includes experience in North America and Europe:

  • Miller High School: Defensive Backs Coach (2016–2017)
  • St. Lawrence University (NCAA): Defensive Backs Coach (2018),
  • St. Lawrence University (NCAA): Receivers Coach & Pass Game Coordinator (2019–2021)
  • Neu-Ulm Spartans (Germany): Offensive Coordinator (2022),
  • Neu-Ulm Spartans (Germany): Associate Head Coach & Offensive Coordinator (2023)
  • Bowdoin College (NCAA): Receivers Coach (2023)
  • Regina Thunder: Quarterbacks Coach (2024)

Thunder head coach Scott MacAulay is excited to continue working with Gusway.

“Carter Gusway shared his vast experience in Europe, the USA and last year as our quarterback coach. His coaching expertise lays a great foundation for our offensive game plan for the upcoming season.”

Gusway is excited to return to defend the Thunder’s PFC championship.

“We will have an exciting offence this season with a plan to run a balanced attack with a strong run game and a passing attack that can deliver an exciting game day experience for our fans.”

For Getzlaf, he returns to the Thunder program, where he started his post-high school career. A two-time Grey Cup Champion and Regina Thunder legend, Getzlaf began his football journey with the Thunder (2001–2004) before playing for the University of Regina Rams (2005–2006) and enjoying an extraordinary 11-year CFL career.

During his professional career, Getzlaf amassed nearly 6,200 receiving yards and 41 touchdowns. He was a two-time CFL all-star, won two Grey Cup championships, and was named the Most Outstanding Canadian in the 2013 Grey Cup.

Getzlaf is excited to give back to the program.

“For me, it’s like coming home. I got my start in junior football, and it’s a great opportunity to join this franchise as a coach. I will do my best to bring my experience and knowledge to assist in developing the young men on this team.”

MacAulay is heading into his 13th season as Thunder head coach and is thrilled to work with Gusway and Getzlaf.

“The combined expertise of these two outstanding leaders ensures that the Thunder’s offence will deliver a balanced, dynamic game plan to thrill fans and continue our pursuit of excellence.”
