Terriers beat North Stars on overtime goal

Terriers took the lead twice, but North Stars responded each time before Yorkton finally won in OT

NORTH BATTLEFORD — A back and forth game at the Access Communications Centre Tuesday finally went into the win column, for the visitors.

The final score was 3-2 for the Yorkton Terriers over the Battlefords North Stars. The Terriers took the lead twice in the game, only for the North Stars to respond each time — including a goal just 45 seconds left in the third period that forced the overtime session. But in the end, it was Kishaun Gervais's goal from Steven Norum at the 2:40 mark of overtime that was the difference.

The Terriers were back into the win column after a couple of weekend losses, including one to Estevan which clinched a division title for the Bruins. Meanwhile, the North Stars are now on a two-game losing streak, after having a four-game win run snapped by La Ronge on the weekend.

Yorkton took the lead on a goal at the 3:21 mark of period one from Erik Boers, with Carson Henry and Kishaun Gervais assisting, for the only goal of the period.

The Terriers dominated that first period, firing 16 shots at North Stars starter Michael Harroch. Meanwhile the Terriers' Tresor Wotton stopped all seven shots fired his way.

At the 10:30 mark of the second, the North Stars tied it up with the 18th of the season for Steven Kesslering. Tanner Gold and Dylan Esau assisted on the goal.

But with 6:27 left in the frame, the Terriers reclaimed the lead on a goal by Steven Norum, with the assist from Karsten Kruska. That would be all the scoring through two.

It looked like the Terriers' one-goal lead would hold up to the end in a chippy, tightly played third period. But with just 45 seconds left Emmett Wurst scored from Tynan Ewart to knot the game up at 2-2 and send it to the extra session.

The overtime period saw several chances and some high drama, but it was Gervais' shot that finally beat Harroch to earn the win. Final shots on goal favoured Yorkton 36-35.

Next up for Yorkton is a trip to Kindersley Wednesday while the North Stars return to action Friday night in Flin Flon.
