No need to axe healthy tree

Dear Editor

First, I must commend the designers of the Innovation Credit Union branches in North Battleford and Battleford on the foresight of incorporating trees and shrubs into their landscapes. Too many commercial buildings are surrounded by asphalt with no green spaces considered. Not only have they planted a good selection of mateiral, but they have allowed a reasonable viable size of space for it to grow.

I was surprised and disappointed to hear the large spruce tree in front of the Battleford branch is scheduled for removal. From what I have heard the decision was made several years ago because of safety concerns regarding the cash drop off box, as well as some tidiness issues. Since that decision was made, action was taken to improve the safety situation. Lighting was added for night deposits and the canopy of the tree was raised to provide a better line of sight to the area of concern. Tidiness issues could easily be addressed.

My issue is the removal of a perfectly healthy tree. The tree is full and green to the top. It has not been damaged by storms or high winds and exhibits no signs of leaning. It is not lifting the sidewalks or damaging the building's foundation. It has adequate space to grow and as long as it is treated properly could easily live to be 100 years old. Only a small amount of proper pruning would be necessary to give clearance for roof renovations and to remove normal amounts of deadwood up the centre trunk area.

Having a tree this size in front of this building is a benefit to the building and the community. Apart from the environmental issues, studies show trees and shrubs in urban areas decrease crime, not increase it.

Please give complete consideration to letting this tree remain as a contribution to our landscape.
