SASKATOON—Saskatoon Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials team responded to an establishment in Spadina Crescent and 21st Street East due to an accidental mixing of chlorine gas and muriatic acid on Friday, Jan. 24.

People have been evacuated from the contaminated area where the chlorine gas was released, a product when chlorine is mixed with muriatic acid. However, two persons were rushed to the hospital, and their condition is unknown at the time of posting.

SFD received the report at 12:13 p.m. and deployed its HAZMAT crew. The crew contained the release of chlorine gas and ventilated the area. SFD personnel remained on the scene to monitor the air quality and declared the scene safe at 3:05 p.m.

The gas mixture of chlorine and muriatic acid could lead to severe injuries and even fatality to people exposed to it.

This is the second time the SFD has responded to an incident requiring its HAZMAT crew this month. On Saturday, Jan. 11, a suspicious package was reported at Canada Post’s main office, but it was later found non-hazardous.
