WILKIE – Wilkie teen, Kayden Cey has knocked it out of the park, recently signing a two-year contract to play baseball at Dakota College in Bottineau, ND.
Cey started playing baseball around the age of nine, giving him a total of seven years in the game between Wilkie and Unity. He was given the opportunity to play for the U18AAA Sun Devils in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League two years ago when the team was formed.
The young man has been involved in many sports in his short 18 years. He was also part of the U18AA West Central Wheat Kings this past season as a forward. Cey said in his interview with SASKTODAY.ca that the politics of hockey made it easier for him to pursue baseball.
“A coach from the USA National team told me ‘If you make an error, pretend a scout just walked in, don’t let the mistake affect you,’ and that has been some of the best advice I ever received,” said the Wilkie teen.
Although Cey will miss his family, friends and the frequent fishing trips, he said he is excited to make to the move to North Dakota to play competitive, high-level baseball. He will attend Dakota College for two years and has plans to move to North Dakota State University for architecture.
“I have always loved to build and create new things. It is one of those professions that is not easily replaceable by artificial intelligence,” Cey explained.
Cey’s college signing is also significant to the Sun Devils team, as he is the first player to get such an offer.
The teen said that his grandfather, Kenny Cey, has been a big inspiration to him over the years.
“He always told me that I can do whatever I put my mind to. He helped me believe in myself,” said Cey.
Cey will continue to play for the U18 AAA Sun Devils for the 2024 season, with the first game in Unity slated for May 8 at 6:30 p.m.
