Busy weekend for multiple high school teams

High school sports teams ventured over the entire province over the weekend for conferences and provincial tournaments.

UNITY— Whether it was on the ice, the court, the mat or the nets, high school students were showcasing their athletic abilities throughout the province.

Curling

Unity Composite High School not only hosted the district and regional events for senior curling, they also won the bid to host provincials over the March 7 & 8 weekend. Welcoming teams from Moose Jaw, Canora, Foam Lake, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Swift Current and Watson, the Unity Curling Club was packed with spectators both at ice level and from higher viewing in the upper portion of the Unity Community Centre. Although the Unity senior mixed curling team put forth their best effort, they were out of the standings after their third game. Swift Current won the provincial title for the first time, with Yorkton placing second and Canora third.

Basketball

Both the senior girls and boys basketball teams competed in conferences over the weekend, with the boys traveling to Maidstone to play against Makwa first, followed by the hosting team in the final, March 8. They will be hosting teams from Maple Creek, Waldheim and Esterhazy for regionals on March 14 and 15. In the 1A conference, Kerrobert settled for second place in Hafford after losing to the hosting team in the final. They will travel to Kinistino for their regional games.

Biggar won the first game, however, they were not able to overcome the Warriors, settling for second place. The Warriors will be advancing to regionals in Indian Head, competing against Langenburg, Birch Hills and the host team. Closer to home, both Wilkie and Kerrobert are hosting their regional playoffs as well, where Eston, Asquith and Luseland will play in Kerrobert and Macklin, Lashburn and Rosthern will meet on the court in Wilkie.

Wrestling

Between UCHS and McLurg High School, four wrestlers attended the provincial championships in Regina. Representing the Warriors on the mats were Willem Hoogstad and Jamal Starchief. Starchief, who placed third at last year’s provincials, worked his way up to a silver medal in the 73 kg weight class.
