Colbey Frocklage hurls the ball towards the plate. Frocklage was the starting pitcher in the May 30 game against the Wilkie Brewers, which ultimately was called due to persistent rain.

The Unity Cardinals are currently at the top of the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League standings, with six wins and only one loss. The other local team, the Wilkie Brewers bookend the other side of the standings, with just one win and five losses.

The Cards’ only loss was to the North Battleford Beavers, 9-3 on May 22. The Beavers are undefeated but with five wins, thus the Cards being ahead of them in the standings, at least for the time being.

The Brewers won their very first game, beating the young Oil City Ducks 12-7 May 26, but since then lost to Standard Hill (twice), Lashburn, Mervin and Glaslyn.

The Cardinals’ next game is at home, Sunday, June 16 at 4:30 p.m., where the Lloyd Twins will stop for a game on their way from Wilkie. They also host the visiting Glaslyn Orioles Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m.

Wilkie plays a double-header against the Beavers tonight, June 14, in North Battleford, and hosts the Lloydminster Twins Sunday, June 16 at noon.

As might be expected, the Beavers dominate the top 10 list in the batting stats taking half of the spots, but Unity’s Ethan Scherr with a batting average of .800 and Wilkie’s Mike Sittler whose average is .667 are also on the list.
