UNITY – The Grade 6 class at St. Peter’s School is one of the many participants who have taken the CBC Music Class Challenge.
Under the direction of teacher Hannah Kendrick, the students have submitted their video to the challenge’s YouTube channel.
Kendrick is the new music teacher at St. Peter’s School and learned about the challenge through another music teacher she knows.
“As a first-year music teacher along with teaching Grade 6 for several years, I asked the students if this was something they would be interested in. I knew they were up for the challenge and felt they were a good class to work with,” said Kendrick.
This competition started in 2015 and every year the challenge chooses a selection of Canadian music for groups to choose from. Kendrick’s class chose the song “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. Groups that are entering the challenge can also choose to perform as full vocal, full instrumental or both.
Each group is put into a category, where the top class in each category will win $3,000 in musical instruments for their school while other prizes are available to other categories aside from the schools.
Kendrick said the students were nervous to begin with but have found ways to overcome the nerves and have been surprised with how much they have improved since starting.
“They have gained more confidence, and it has been a great way to start off the year,” adds Kendrick.
At the time of the interview, the top 10 classes were to be announced Dec. 6 followed by the winners and runners-up to be announced Dec. 13.
