UNITY -- A simple request followed by the desire to fulfill the request resulted in a remarkable turnout of a showcase of cars and trucks at Unity’s Long Term Care facility.
Unity LTC Recreation Director, Brianna Heck, contacted car enthusiast, Kelly McLellan, asking if could help arrange some cars to come to their location the evening of June 27 for a mini car show. Heck knows that connection with community is important for residents overall well-being. And, this event, provided a good dose of enjoyment and smiles, as well as a high level of community engagement.
McLellan had no trouble getting participants and in fact, he himself, was amazed at the turn out of participants.
As cars entered the LTC parking loop and set up, people casually wandered about admiring the vehicles on display. LTC residents were brought out and those that could move around the vehicles were more than happy to mix and mingle. Those that could not move around so freely greatly enjoyed members of the public stopping to offer their hellos and well wishes. Plentiful smiles were evidence that this informal gathering was a big hit.
Unity’s Parkview Place has often touted the value and energy inter-generational community connections can offer seniors. The June 27 activity that came together quickly and relatively effortlessly was a example of this. It gave residents the opportunity to step out of their routine as well as enjoy the option of visiting they might otherwise not have experienced. Additionally, getting an up close and personal car show was an added bonus as some residents talked of their vehicle experiences of yesteryear.
Heck said she was overwhelmed with the turnout and vows that another event whether later this year or next year might include a barbecue or another social opportunity for both residents and community members alike to take part in.
The group of car enthusiasts decided to spread the joy and also drove to senior centres at Parkview Place, 8th Avenue Estates and Luther Place following the long term care appearance. The surprise and excitement by those residents was evident.
Dozens of social media posts followed the event heralding the success, the community camaraderie and the overall experience for all who part of it.
