WILKIE — Despite the frigid temperatures Jan. 12 and 13, five of eight teams still showed up for the McLurg Broncs’ senior girls’ home basketball tournament. And, although the number of spectators was down, the girls still managed to raise close to $2,300 for breast cancer research.
Taking part in a rotation of “Pink Games,” the Wilkie high school team will be taking the funds raised to John Paul II Collegiate in February where participating teams will each bring a donation. JP II students will then send them away as one large lump sum. Last year, the Pink Game was held in Meadow Lake and next year McLurg will be hosting the official game.
During their home tournament, the girls raised funds by charging spectators admission, selling products such as pink socks and headbands, and – thanks to the generosity of local businesses –a silent auction.
Coached by Mark Myszczyszyn and Jeff Hyland, the players, all Grade 11 and 12 students, started their fundraising in December. The girls played a team of Broncs alumni Dec. 23 and got a head start, raising more than $650.
As many community members no doubt stayed home in their warm houses last weekend, the Broncs will continue to accept donations to their cause until the end of January. Funds can be dropped off at the high school or given to any team member: Brooke Bannerman, Cheyanne Cey, Kiri Myszczyszyn, Emily Hango, Chloe Brebner, Tyra Myszczyszyn, Kieran Brebner, Hailey Hyland, Erin Squires, Reese Fenrich and Alara Lang.
