​UNITY—The annual Quilt Til You Wilt quilting retreat was held again in Unity, drawing quilters of all ages to the upper hall of the Unity Community Centre over the weekend of April 11 to 13. This year, the Round Valley Quilters were the hosts, inviting two vendors to bring some of their products.
On Saturday, the hall was opened up to the public to visit and admire all the hard work that goes into the fabric masterpieces. As visitors reached the top of the steps of the hall, a board with photos and a sympathy card from the Unity Quilters had everyone pause for a moment to remember the late Judy Boskill.
Boskill, who was one of the founding members of the Round Valley Quilters, passed away this past year. Due to Boskill’s health, some of her quilts had gone unfinished.
Boskill’s unfinished projects were eventually finished and donated back to the community. One quilted blanket went to 8th Avenue Estates and is used in the guest bedroom. Another went to Unity’s Long Term Care facility and a third quilt will remain with her quilt club.
This year’s retreat was also a milestone for Kraft’s Catering. For the past 16 years, the husband-and-wife duo closed the kitchen for the final time, treating the group of quilters to their final dishes.
“We were lucky we had them booked before the end of 2024, as we had heard they were hanging up the aprons,” said Cheryl Johnstone, a member of the Round Valley Quilters. She also added that Rose and Ron Kraft were nearly in tears.
After two days of sewing, visiting and laughter, many of the quilters had wilted but left with many fun memories.
