UNITY – Schools and communities gathered at the end of September to the start of October for the annual Terry Fox Run. Schools collected funds for the Terry Fox Foundation, which in turn helps with cancer research.
This year, schools could also collect funds by sharing the online donation link. This allowed family and friends to donate without having any physical money change hands.
The schools within the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald readership area did well in fundraising this year. Kerrobert Composite School raised $2,900 and Luseland School brought in $7,600. Between the two schools in Wilkie, a total of $1,890 was collected and the schools in Unity collected over $1,000. Macklin School has not closed their donations currently as they are close to hitting a goal of $12,000.
Unity resident Allen Buckley was also able to raise funds on his own this year as well. While watching Telemiracle this past March, he started to think of ways he could contribute. Buckley is known for riding around on his bike around town so he said that felt like a good start for him. He got in touch with Kin Club of Unity president Nora Aldred, who then helped him get in touch with the office in Saskatoon to start taking donations. His cycling efforts took off and Buckley was able to donate $1,400 for the Kinsmen Foundation.
The Terry Fox Run is a continuation of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, started on April 12, 1980. Since it’s inception, the foundation has been able to raise more the $850 million and funded 1,300 cancer research projects.
