Wilkie Water Show wows crowd

A large crowd welcomed back the annual Wilkie Water Show after the pandemic halted a swimming season in Wilkie in 2020

WILKIE - It's an annual tradition in Wilkie. Near season’s end the lifeguard team host a water show showcasing several performances and fun as well as some celebratory additional activities in conjunction with the event. There was even more to celebrate as the pool was open the entire 2021 season after being forced into a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Head Lifeguard, Kyra Huber, says, “Our barbecue was a huge success thanks to the support of the community. We sold out our entire supply! We were fortunate to have a couple of community businesses contribute the barbecue and the ice which helped with our event and expenses.”

Following the barbecue was the annual water show portion of the evening. Organizers were thrilled to have around 140 people come out to support this activity, noting this is significantly more than their usual attendance, evidencing the craving for a return to normal in our communities.

The water show included lesson progressions of swimmers from each level of preschool through to levels 1-10, showcasing their skills they learned over the summer in lessons. This was followed by the biggest splash contest, a boat race, awards and the always popular lifeguard routine.

The recipient of awards are as follows: Pool Rat - Kenzie Falcon; Aquacises - Marion Schell; Lane Swim - Erin Squires; Most Improved - Owen Klein; Dedicated Family - Natskes.

The evening wasn’t over just yet as following the water show, the pool hosted the outdoor movie, “Luca,” with 40 people in attendance for that. Most children floated in the water for the duration in the movie and Huber says this is quite the testament, considering temperatures dropped to 12 degrees.

“All in all, it was a great way to end off our season. The lifeguards continue to be amazed at the support this community gives to our pool and appreciate everyone who helped make their season an enjoyable and successful one.”

A number of residents commended the Wilkie pool staff on social media for their efforts throughout the season as well as their above and beyond efforts in putting this event together, bringing the community together for something everyone could enjoy.
