REGINA — The Saskatchewan NDP is asking the speaker of the legislature to convene the Standing Committee on House Services, to probe allegations made by the speaker on the last day of the sitting last month.
As the house was about to adjourn for the summer, and more than likely, until an election in October, Randy Weekes made several allegations against the government. He outlined a series of events that included bullying and intimidation, and Weekes was the one who accused former government house leader Jeremy Harrison of bringing a gun into the legislature.
That last allegation was strongly denied by Harrison and the premier for several weeks, until Harrison admitted to bringing a gun into the legislature on at least one occasion. That admission came with Harrison stepping down as government house leader, but he remained in cabinet.
A letter from the Opposition Critic for Ethics and Democracy Meara Conway was sent to the speaker, formally asking him to convene the committee.
In her letter she urges the speaker to look into these allegations, and that the committee appoint an independent investigator to look into the allegations.
The speaker, in turn, has reached out to the various committee members to ask how they would like to proceed.
