REGINA — After a dominant month of competition that saw him claim five gold medals, Regina’s Jonathan Podbielski has been named February athlete of the month by Saskatchewan Athletics, said Sask Sport in a media release on March 10.
Podbielski’s standout performance came at the Canada West Track and Field Championships at the end of February, where he secured gold in the men’s 1,000-metre, 1,500-metre, and 3,000-metre races. His achievements earned him the men’s performance of the meet award, following his earlier recognition as men’s Canada West track athlete of the year.
Earlier in the month, Podbielski also claimed victories in the 1,500-metre and 3,000-metre events at the Jim Daly Bison Classic in Winnipeg. He later competed at the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational, placing 20th in the 3,000-metre and 21st in the men’s mile.
His strong results qualified him for the U Sports national track and field championships, held March 6-8 in Windsor, Ont., where he capped off his month with a bronze medal in the 1,000-metre.
Podbielski’s nomination for athlete of the month came from Saskatchewan Athletics in recognition of his outstanding achievements on the track.
