REGINA - The University of Regina Students' Union (URSU) has taken legal action against the U of R over withheld fees.
URSU alleges that the U of R has been withholding fees for the 2025 winter semester.
URSU claims that under a written agreement, the U of R would pay the students' union fees around one month after each semester, per court documents obtained by SaskToday.
If such an agreement is discontinued, URSU claims a notice of termination must be given 90 days before the semester's commencement date.
"There has been no such notice given with respect to winter 2025 fees," URSU alleges.
URSU later mentioned the actions taken by the U of R to terminate their fee agreement doesn’t justify the actions to withhold money.
The students' union claims the withheld fees have led to an inability to fund essential services like the students' health insurance program and the bus pass agreement with the City of Regina.
Additionally, without the payment of the funds, URSU alleges it "will cease to continue operations in the near future, causing irreparable damage."
In a statement, the U of R said it’s disappointed in the students' union for taking legal action against the university.
The U of R also said they’re withholding fees due to concerns following the release of URSU’s financial statements.
As for services, the U of R said it implemented a payment protocol so URSU could collect student fees, ensuring operations and services could continue without disruption.
However, URSU has apparently not engaged in the protocols and accessed the funds.
The U of R said no further comments will be made with the ongoing legal matter.
URSU is currently facing legal action taken by both UR Pride and U of R Women’s Centre.
Both have claimed URSU withheld funding owed to their respective groups.
