Simmie's rink: Where food, fun and community come together

SIMMIE — The Simmie rink, built in 1957 and expanded in 1967, has been revitalized thanks to the hard work of community volunteers.

Today, it's a bustling hub of activity, with a dedicated team working together to make it a success.

Leading the charge is the Simmie Recreation Board, consisting of David Garthus, Connie Bartusek, Rick and Betty Rouse, and current president Trampus Lacelle,  along with Heath Wilson the facility's caretaker.

Together, the group oversees the rink's operations and ensures it remains a welcoming space for the community.

One of the rink's most popular features is its food service. Every Friday, volunteers come together to cook up delicious burgers and serve them with a side of soup and dessert. It's a hit with the locals, with up to 40-50 people attending each week. On special days, like Feb. 21, when the rink won a local radio contest for best rink burger, the crowd can swell to over 85 people.

The secret to the rink's success? Affordable prices and a commitment to quality. The award-winning burger, made with fresh buns from Gull Lake bakery and juicy burgers from Treens meats in Swift Current, is just $8 for a single cheeseburger and $10 for a double. And with a variety of toppings to choose from, there's something for everyone.

But it's not just about the food. The Simmie rink is also home to recreational hockey on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons, with Rick and Betty Rouse often cooking up burgers for the participants.

With its volunteer-run program, the rink is able to keep costs low while still providing a valuable service to the community.

As Trampus Lacelle, the current president, puts it, "It's not about making money, it's about getting the community together. It helps pays the bills a little bit but it is more about getting everybody out."

And with its warm atmosphere and welcoming vibe, the Simmie rink is the perfect place to do just that.
