Don was born on September 10, 1924 on the family farm at Arcola, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully surrounded by family February 13, 2015.聽 Don attended school in Arcola and enlisted in the South Saskatchewan Regiment in November, 1941.聽 He served overseas in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.聽 He returned home in November, 1945 and was discharged in January, 1946.聽 When Don returned from the War, he built and operated a garage for a number of years in Arcola with the help of his father and brother Russ.聽 Don married Joyce Chandler on September 27, 1949 in Arcola.聽 He sold the garage and then owned and operated school buses in the district for several years.聽 He also owned one of the first Bombardiers in Arcola and spent many cold, blizzardy days and nights driving it.聽 Don started farming in 1961 on land originally owned by his grandfather.聽 That land is now being farmed by the fifth generation of Hislop鈥檚.聽 Don loved the Moose Mountains, better known to him as the 鈥渂ush鈥�.聽 Don also custom hauled cattle in South Eastern Saskatchewan for many years.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Don & Joyce raised three children in Arcola 鈥� Linda, Judy and Scott.聽 Don will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Joyce, and family:聽 Linda (Don), Pam (Shawn) & Khrista (Matt); Judy (Frank), Stacey (John), Shannon (Kim), Chad (Lisa) & Marlis (Scott); Scott (Elaine), Lucas, Tyson & Hayley; and 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.聽 He was pre-deceased by his parents, Thomas & Mary Hislop; brothers, Bud & Russ; sisters, Lois & Janet; brothers 鈥� in 鈥� law, Gordon Chandler & Jack Chandler; and sister-in-law Evelyn Chandler.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Family gatherings were a great source of enjoyment for Don.聽 He took pride in the accomplishments of his children & grand children.聽 He was known for his sharp wit, telling stories and his sense of humour.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The family would like to thank all those who cared for Don in recent years, at Moose Mountain Lodge, and supported him during his battle with Alzheimer鈥檚.聽 A celebration of life took place at St. Andrews United Church in Arcola on Monday, February 16, 2015.聽 Officiating the service was Reverend Kochy David.聽 Pallbearers were:聽 Lucas Hislop, Tyson Hislop, Chad Eaton, Shannon Eaton, Matt Kellett & Scott Dalshaug.聽聽 Soloist was Lisa Eaton.聽 The Eulogy was given by Shannon Eaton, Pam Plaster, Khrista Kellett, Tyson Hislop & Zac Plaster.聽 A tea was held following the service at the Arcola Legion Hall.

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Thank you to the doctors and all the staff at Moose Mountain Lodge for the care, compassion and love you gave to Dad over the past three years.聽 Each and every one of you are very special people.聽 Thank you also to everyone聽for the lovely floral聽arrangements, food, phone calls and visits over the past week.聽 We appreciate the support of family and friends who were able to join us to give our farewells to Dad.聽 Thank you to Wayne Orsted for his professional support with the funeral arrangements, Reverend Kochy David for the service and his patience with us while we made the funeral聽special and unique to our Husband, Dad and Grandpa and to the United Church Women for the lovely lunch after the service.聽 We will cherish our memories and know he is at peace.
