Dorothy was born on March 14th 1929 in Carlyle Saskatchewan. Her Scottish parents married in Winnipeg after immigrating and raised 7 children while farming in Manitoba and then finally in Carlyle Saskatchewan. She was the youngest of seven kids. She always said they weren't rich but she had a great childhood with siblings and parents she loved.
She met Bert at a dance on April Fool's day in 1949 at Mctaggart, Saskatchewan. She always said that she had been fooled ever since. It was quite fitting that they met that way as they both loved to dance. On June 14th 1950 they were married in the Weyburn United Church.
They have three children, William David (Bill), Oct 13th 1953, Bonnie Lou, March 25th 1955 and Laura Lynn (Laurie), July 31 1964. All of their children were born in Weyburn Saskatchewan.
When they first got married they owned Campbell's Trucking Company in Weyburn. In 1969 Bert and Dorothy purchased land in Killarney Manitoba so that they could build the Killarney Livestock Exchange. They packed up the house and the kids and made the move to the beautiful town of Killarney. Killarney quickly became home as they met amazing people that became lifelong friends.
Dorothy was known as the Coffee Bar Lady. It was there where she made so many friends and touched so many lives through her great humor and wit. Dorothy would bake every Wednesday for sale day Thursday. She made Jelly rolls, sloppy joe's, brownies and egg salad sandwiches. When you came in for lunch you were always greeted with a smile, a laugh, a story or a sarcastic jab.
After they sold the Livestock exchange Dorothy embraced volunteering so she could continue enjoying working with people. She volunteered at the Hospital with the tuck cart, where she enjoyed visiting with the patients, worked at the Thrift shop and baked for many fund raisers or special occasions.
Dorothy's greatest joy was her grandchildren. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren, Kory, Brock, Sean, Lindsay and Allison. She and the grandchildren cherished every moment they had with each other. Nothing was more important to Dorothy than her family.
Dorothy's dynamic personality allowed her to have friends young and old. She loved socializing be it a formal occasion or having friends over for coffee. She always had room for one more at the table for lunch and the coffee pot was always on. Friends and Family always felt welcome. She cherished those great conversations and laughs. Her memory was incredible, she never forgot a thing, because she cared.
Dorothy went into the Killarney Hospital on January 16th 2014 and passed peacefully May 28th 2014. She maintained her wisdom, humour and care for others to the end, even as she was suffering.
Dorothy called her nurses her angels. Dorothy was very appreciative of the exceptional care she received during her stay in the Killarney hospital.
Dorothy is survived by her Husband Bert, son Bill, daughter-in-law Deborah, daughter Bonnie, daughter Laurie, son -in-law Darren Vandenberghe and her grandchildren Kory McGuire, Brock McGuire and Sean McGuire, Lindsay Vandenberghe, Allison Vandenberghe.
