YOUNG: George "Ronald" Young passed away Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the age of 92.
Ron is survived by his children, Dale (Carol), Oliver BC, Dawn (Kerry) McKenzie, Delburne, AB, Jim (Aurora), Brooks, AB, Barry (Shelly) Devon, AB, Cathy (Bill) Brown, Carlyle, SK and Laurie (Rod Fraser) Young, Ft. Smith, NWT; 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; sister Velma (Bill) Clark; brother-in-law Lorne (Lois) DeGeer and sisters-in-law, Earla Young, Val Young, Audrey Young and June Hicks. He was predeceased by his wife Florence, daughter Judy and brothers Wes, Howard, Lorne, Ralph and Bill; sisters-in-law Nona Young and Blanche Ponich.
Ron was born May 6, 1920 to Archie and Maisie in a farmhouse northeast of Carlyle.
(These are excerpts from the eulogy given by Barry):
"Dad was married to Florence DeGeer on May 12, 1943. This same year he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Quebec where he served until the end of the war, then returning to the Carlyle area to farm. Dale was born in Quebec and the rest of us in this area.
Dad was a farmer. He liked being a farmer, he felt good about being a farmer. Dad enjoyed his equipment, it didn't need to be shiny and green. Some unique and unorthodox pieces were created and it was not unusual to see two tractors hooked together or a cab built out of a car body.
In the spring Dad was always on a mission to get the seeding done and in the fall to get the crops off. He was like a drill sergeant and nothing but the weather could stop him. He continued to farm until 2002. At 82 years of age, by himself, he put his last crop in and took his last crop off. We know calling it quits was a hard thing for him, but he knew it was time.
Dad was proud and strong. He and mom went through some tough times and situations and we never heard dad complain or lay the blame elsewhere.
Curling was in his blood and grain farming was the perfect match. He, along with his dad and brothers, were very successful curlers, winning many bonspiels, championships and prizes over the years.
Throughout his life he was a member of various organizations, such as the curling, golfing, the Lions and the Legion.
In the early 80's Mom and Dad got their first taste of and Arizona winter. They traded in curling brooms for golf clubs and never looked back. They bought their own unit in Mesa Dunes which they enjoyed together until 2000 when mom passed away. Dad continued to make his trips to spend time with his many "snowbird" friends.
Dad was a remarkable man in many ways. The nurses often double checked his file thinking there had been a mistake recording his age. I loved to tell people he golfed 100 rounds last summer at 92 years of age.
The doctors in the last few days marvelled at the strength and reserves he had and it's funny, I thought he was going to live forever."
Memorial service was held at the Carlyle United Church on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. Interment followed at the Glen Morris Cemetery.
Thank you to Sandy Dalziel for officiating at the service, Wendy Rounce and the choir, the members of the Legion for their "salute" and the UCW for lunch.
Thank you to all our family and friends for the many expressions of sympathy shown to us. All your phone calls, food, cards, flowers, visits and hugs mean a lot and are appreciated.
