CARLYLE — The Carlyle U15 Cougars are not a team to be reckoned with as they move on to round two of the provincial playoffs.
Dave East has been helping coach the U15 team for five years but became head coach last year and is now into his second season. Danielle Steele is the manager and takes care of scheduling and many other team tasks, with help from the parents.
Their provincial playoffs started off well, with the Cougars taking on the Moosomin Rangers. The first game was played on Feb. 11 in Moosomin, where the Cougars came home victorious with a 5-2 win.
The Rangers traveled to Carlyle on Feb. 13 in hopes of tying the series and pushing it to a third game, but the Cougars had no intentions of letting them win. They completed a clean sweep with a 6-4 victory, sending them to round two of the provincial playoffs.
The first game of round two was played on Feb. 22 in Canora against the Highway 9 Predators. With round one under their belts, the U15 Cougars took the ice with attitude, determination, and a readiness to play hockey.
It didn’t take long for the Cougars to get on the scoreboard, and they kept the pressure on. By the later part of the game, they were up 6-0. The final score was 8-0 in favor of the Cougars.
Game two will be played in Carlyle on March 2, and a win could send them to round three.
Regular Season Playoffs
The league ended their regular season on Feb. 17 with their last game against the Oxbow Huskies. The Cougars won 8-7, earning two more points.
This placed the Cougars in fourth place, and they began their first round of regular season playoffs against Estevan on Feb. 21 in Carlyle.
It was a tough game, and although the Cougars played hard, they lost 3-2.
The next playoff game against Estevan is on Feb. 25 in Estevan, with a third game (if needed) on Feb. 26 in Carlyle.
In the league playoffs, the teams play the best out of three games, and the games are full-length.
The U15 Cougars hope to see a great crowd to cheer them on to victory in their next home games.
