ESTEVAN - Ethan Ehrmantraut of Estevan wants everyone to know what a wonderful dog he has in Melly.

Ehrmantraut entered himself and Melly for the America's Favourite Pet contest. One dog and one cat from all the entries will win $10,000 each and be featured on the cover of Modern Dog or Modern Cat magazine.

Ehrmantraut said Melly is a three-year-old rough collie mixed with a golden retriever. Ehrmantraut adopted Melly on Valentine's Day in 2022, when Melly was less than two months old.

He found out about the contest while on the internet. When he realized that the Kong dog toy company was involved in the competition, Ehrmantraut decided to enter.

Melly is a great dog who has lots of energy, Ehrmantraut said. The pooch's bio on the America's Favourite Pet website says Melly is a very loving boy. His favourite toy is his Kong teddy bear, and he brings it to bed every night.

"He loves snow and going on hikes," Ehrmantraut wrote.

Voting for the contest is already a few rounds deep. Ehrmantraut said people didn't believe him initially when he said it was legitimate, but as the competition progressed, the support has grown.

"My dog has more friends than I do," Ehrmantraut said with a laugh.

He didn't think he would make it through the first round. As of Tuesday morning, Ehrmantraut and Melly were second in their group for this round; voting closes Thursday at 9 p.m. Saskatchewan time. He believes he'll advance to the next round if they finish in the top 10 in their group.

If Ehrmantraut wins, he'd use the $10,000 for renovations on his home and to keep up with the changes in the economy. And, of course, there would be lots of money for dog food and dog toys for Melly.
