Provincial high school curling competitions were held across the province over the weekend.
In Wynyard, the hometown team went undefeated through the ‘A’ event of the boys provincial championship, advancing to the 1-2 Page playoff game.
Wynyard scored a 6-3 victory over Avonlea to advance directly to the final, where they shaded Yorkton Regional 3-1 to claim the title.
Eight girls' teams converged in Wawota to compete for the provincial championship. Estevan and Kincaid advanced to the 1-2 Page playoff game, going undefeated in the ‘A’ event.
Kincaid earned a direct berth in the final in that showdown with a 7-1 victory.
However, the Saskatoon Holy Cross team got hot at the right time. They would win the 3-4 Page playoff 8-2 over North Battleford. The Cross girls would then trim Estevan 9-1 in the semifinal before upsetting Kincaid 10-5 in the final.
The Open Mixed championship was held in Unity. Saskatoon’s Tommy Douglas Collegiate and Yorkton Regional advanced directly from the ‘A’ event into the 1-2 Page playoff game.
Yorkton would edge the Saskatoon school 5-4 to earn their spot in the final.
Like the girl's event, Swift Current would save their best for the playoffs, topping Canora in the 3-4 Page game and then Tommy Douglas in the semi-final. In the final, Swift Current would continue the momentum topping Yorkton 5-3 in the final.
Prince Albert was the host site for the open double provincial competition. Oxbow 1 and Gladmar 1 would advance to the playoffs through the ‘A’ event.
In the 1-2 Page playoff, Oxbow scored a 6-2 victory, sending Gladmar to the semi-final. In that game, Gladmar outscored Hazlet 12-8 to set up a rematch with Oxbow in the final.
The last game was a nail-biter with Gladmar prevailing 7-4 to win the championship.
