HITCHCOCK - A great grey owl was spotted earlier this week in the southeast.

Heliana de Souza-Wagner captured this photo Thursday in Hitchcock. The bird was sitting on a lower branch of a tree at the town’s dugout.

They're commonly found in the Boreal Forest and being able to see and photograph one in the Estevan area is a rare opportunity.

She said her son Allan took their dog Jasper for a walk, spotted the beautiful owl and came back home to tell her. Allan understood how rare an opportunity it was and knew how excited she would be to go snap a few shots.

Then de Souza-Wagner phoned her friend Chuck Chow and he was there promptly to see it, as he also knows how rare it is to spot a great grey owl.
