ASSINIBOIA - An Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and accessories package was presented to the Assiniboia Museum by a family that had benefited from the device’s availability in the past.

The donation was made during the March meeting of the Assiniboia and District Historical Society board of directors.

The Assiniboia and District Historical Society was presented with an AED for installation in the  local museum. This life saving apparatus is a completely automated device that is used in the event of heart attack or other life threatening heart rhythm irregularities.

Using voice prompts, it guides its user in every aspect of the process of resuscitation from calling 911, through the diagnostic procedure, to determining if an electrical shock to the heart is necessary. Anyone in a situation where they witness an individual in apparent heart difficulty can use the device with complete confidence until trained help arrives.

Bob and Shirley Scott, who presented the AED to the Museum board, are well aware of the value of the placement of such equipment locally.

In December of 2019, Bob suffered a cardiac arrest at the Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreation Centre. Shirley, and others, were able to maintain Bob until the EMT’s arrived. At that time, there was one AED in the Prince of Wales, located on the first floor.

As a result of the emergency, another device was purchased and installed on the second floor with financial assistance from Bob and Shirley Scott.

The Assiniboia Museum’s AED equipment will be installed in a prominent and visible location with signage to make location easy to spot.

The Assiniboia and District Historical Society appreciates this generous donation and the extra safety it adds to the local museum.
