STOUGHTON - The school community council for Stoughton Central School held their welcome back barbecue on Sept. 7.
“It is a great way for new families to meet other families in our community,” said SCC member Rhonda Breault. “It is also a great way for the new students to meet the teachers in a relaxed and social event.”
This is the first SCC barbecue held in over two years, due to the restrictions that were in place from COVID-19.
Scott Kirkness, one of the teachers on hand, moved to Stoughton 10 years ago from Sudbury, Ont. He teaches English at the school, while his wife teaches in Kipling.
Kirkness feels it is important to hold these events to promote community.
Approximately 100 people took advantage of the barbecue, which was by donation only.
“We don’t want anyone to feel left out, for any reason, so people give what they can, and if they can’t, then just enjoy a burger,” said Breault.
School t-shirts were available, along with other school clothing. They will be placing an order Sept. 21.
The SCC holds other fundraisers as well throughout the year. At Christmas it is the poinsettia sales, and in the spring, it will be planters and annuals.
At present they are waiting for their licence from the Saskatchewan Lottery Association to begin a 50/50. This will be an ongoing event. Once the licence is in place the sales will begin.
Monies raised by the committee are used to purchase items for the school that are not allocated in the school’s budget. Each school has a committee like this to be the voice of the school and the community.
According to Breault, they seek out what is needed and aim to gain funds for the item.
Items such as the sound system in the school’s gymnasium and the playground equipment have been purchased through the work of this committee.
Volunteers were at each table while others welcomed the people.
Breault felt it was a great turnout and hopes to see everyone next year.
