WEYBURN – The Weyburn Comprehensive School Grades 7-9 drama/music students are working hard in rehearsal to put on the stage musical, Newsies Jr., on Nov. 21, 22 and 23 at the Cugnet Centre, at 7 p.m. each evening.

Tickets are available at the Weyburn Comp School’s main office, and cost $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and children five and under are free, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Disney's Newsies Jr. is a 60-minute version of the 2012 Broadway musical, based on the 1992 film. Inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City, Newsies Jr. features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein.

When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys' expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what's right.

The lead role of Jack Kelly is played by Chris Dayaan, along with fellow “newsies” Crutchie (played by Grace Anderson), Danny (Mataya Bowerin), Leslie (Meisha Bowerin) and several others.

Jack’s story first becomes public when reporter Katherine Plumber (Bailey Roy) interviews him, and the fight is on with the newspaper owners.

Joseph Pulitzer is one of the owners, played by Patrick Johnson; Governor Teddy Roosevelt is played by Walker Cugnet, and the police chief is played by Sawyer Tollefson.

Including the now-classic songs “Carrying the Banner”, “Seize the Day” and “Santa Fe”, Newsies Jr. is a timeless story full of spirit and heart.
