WEYBURN – The ambassador of France, Michel Miraillet, paid a visit to the Nexans plant in Weyburn on Wednesday, along with Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA Dustin Duncan.
The ambassador was accompanied by Nicolas Baudouin, General Consul of France, Morgan Larhant, head of the Economic Service for Canada, and Frank Marchetti, Deputy Head of Mission, along with Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy and MLA Lori Carr.
The group toured the Weyburn wire and cable plant and spoke with employees about the importance of electrification, renewable energy development and copper recycling.
Nexans is a French company, with headquarters in Paris, and the Weyburn plant is the only electrical cable manufacturing facility in Western Canada.
Nexans also operates two facilities in Eastern Canada, a copper spinning plant in Montreal, and a power distribution cable plant in Fergus, Ont.
The Weyburn plant was first opened by Western Wire and Cable Co. in 1956, later acquired by Canada Wire in 1971, and then Alcatel in 1993 before the creation of Nexans in 2000.
The Weyburn plant supplies provincial energy distributors, including SaskPower, BC Hydro and Manitoba Hydro for low and medium voltage lines, as well as for high-voltage lines between provinces.
