In an effort to use unique ways to engage with the community, Assiniboia RCMP Detachment kicked off National Police Week with Decorate the Detachment day on May 11.聽 Kindergarten to Grade 4 from 7th Avenue School attended the detachment to put their artist skills to the test on the front driveway.聽 Students were invited to draw anything they wished, with many students drawing police animals, badges, and positive messages.聽 After a brief lesson in marching and teamwork from Sgt. Dennis Silliker, Sgt. Dave McClarty and his Police Service Dog, Hawk, surprised students with some impressive tracking and obedience skill demonstrations, answered questions, and posed for photos with each grade.

The public was invited to a COVID-safe drive-thru style barbeque on May 12.聽 Community members drove up, donated generously to the Better Together Initiative and were treated to a hot dog, drink, chips and dessert.聽 Over 200 hot dogs were served up over the noon hour with some patrons returning later in the day and offering a bigger donation for their delicious lunch!聽 Over $600 was raised to purchase t-shirts for Assiniboia Composite School students to be a part of Better Together Initiative that helps open the lines of communication about mental health and wellness for all age groups.

To wrap up the week, Assiniboia Detachment members challenged Assiniboia Elementary School Grades 5 鈥 8 to attend their first ever 鈥渂ootcamp鈥.聽 Students were put through the paces with fun and physical events such as Tennis Ball Madness and Mud Pit Crawl.聽 Detachment Fitness Coordinator, Ashley Burnay, pushed the participants to their limits while they fought to have the fastest time in these team-building events.聽 Smiles were endless after a full day of fun in the sun!

Assiniboia RCMP Detachment would like to extend appreciation to all participating community partners, including Assiniboia Mayor and Council, Assiniboia Recreation Department, Southland Co-op Assiniboia as well as the tremendous teachers and students from 7th Avenue School and Assiniboia Elementary. Assiniboia is a thriving and active community that is Better Together - thank you and we look forward to more great activities this summer!
