ASSINIBOIA - Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held outside at the Cenotaph at Assiniboia Town Hall on Thursday, November 11. The ceremonies start at 10:30 a.m., and local residents can start arriving around 10:15 a.m.
Social distancing will be observed during the outdoor ceremony. There will be a group wreath-laying ceremony. A Legion member will lay the wreath honouring the Silver Cross War Mother.
As the ceremony is held outside, there will be no COVID-19 vaccination checks made, and residents can choose to wear masks if they so desire.
Remembrance Day is the end of the Veterans’ Week proclamation, which was declared by the Town of Assiniboia on Oct. 25.
The proclamation read:
Whereas: Canada has grown into a vibrant country, a nation shaped by its people, their courage and their commitment to protecting and defending human rights whenever and whenever they are threatened;
Whereas: Peace and freedom are not just words; they are values and beliefs worthy of sacrifices yesterday, today and tomorrow;
Whereas: This year’s theme commemorates the 30th anniversary of the end of the Gulf War and residents are encouraged to learn more about that key battle and conflicts that led to the end of that conflict;
Whereas: Canadian sacrifice and valour will be remembered forever as a rich legacy of peace, freedom and identity;
Therefore: We, Council of the Town of Assiniboia, do hereby proclaim November 5 to 11, 2021 as
Veteran’s Week in the Town of Assiniboia.
The Carpet One store in Assiniboia is currently collecting donations for the Royal Canadian Legion.
Memorabilia from local veterans are currently on display in their windows. Residents can bring down information on veterans from their families, for a donation to the Legion.
