Residents of Weyburn and the surrounding area now have a beautiful, two-part recreational facility that will help make the summer pass with great fun and enjoyment, since the City of Weyburn opened its new swimming pool on Canada Day.It was no mean feat for the city, as there were significant costs to doing this, and to then design and build a brand new outdoor pool which is a junior-Olympic size with a childrens waterpark featured added. The Young Fellows stepped up with a donation of $50,000, Cenovus provided $100,000, which included the purchase of the new climbing wall; and the federal and provincial governments helped to provide a municipal infrastructure grant of $250,000.The result is a great new facility that has a greater capacity than the Centennial pool, and includes a shallow area for children, and a separate area for infants and toddlers, along with a slide and the climbing wall. The second part of the citys water facilities is, of course, the Don Mitchell Paddling Pool, with the Young Fellows water park adjacent to it. Residents, particularly those with small children, will do well not to forget this facility when those hot summer days arrive and you need to have everyone cooled off.The Young Fellows also put a huge commitment into this facility, and the best part for city and area residents is that the park and paddling pool is completely free of charge to use and enjoy. The club is to be highly commended for their support of both of these facilities, as it continues a historical tradition that goes back to the Great Depression, when they helped build the first outdoor swimming pool in Saskatchewan in 1930.There are many communities that struggle to provide sufficient facilities for their residents to enjoy, and are limited in what they can do; Weyburn is doubly blessed, and all residents should take full advantage.
