WEYBURN – A longtime city councillor for Weyburn, Dick Michel, and a long-service employee of the City of Weyburn, Wendy Neiszner, were given awards by the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) at their recent convention in Saskatoon.
Neither recipient was able to be present for the awards presentation, but will be recognized by city council at a future meeting.
Michel, who stepped down from council in March due to health reasons, was recognized for his 21 years of service.
He served on council since 2001, and was elected for seven consecutive terms.
Michel served on many city boards and committees over the years.
He has been a resident of Weyburn since 1973, and has been been married to wife Audrey for 55 years. They have two sons, Chris (Lindsee) and Ryan (Kristelle), and grandchildren Olivia, Ben, Kate and Jack.
He has been involved in several significant decisions by city council, with accomplishments including development of a spray park, the Credit Union Spark Centre, and a city-wide recycling program.
Neiszner has provided 25 years of service to the City of Weyburn, serving as a key member of the Leisure Services department, where she has always been the “glue” to hold the teams together.
In her role, she has provided front-line service to facility users, community groups, and patrons, and has been a leader amongst her peers.
She has always been the first to sign up whenever a void was recognized, and has gone above and beyond expectations. She retired on Dec. 31, 2022, and is sorely missed by her colleagues.
