New memorial benches honour memories, moments of three schools

The idea for memorial benches came about after Fletcher Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services received a request from the former School Community Councils for a memorial plaque.
Weyburn - Three memorial benches were installed at the new Legacy Park Elementary School, in an effort to honour the memories and moments experienced by students and staff attending Souris, Haig and Queen Elizabeth Schools.

The idea for memorial benches came about after Fletcher Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services received a request from the former School Community Councils for a memorial plaque.

“One of the SCC members approached me about doing a memorial to commemorate the three schools that were closing, and have it displayed at the brand new school. We tossed around a few ideas, and thought of these benches,” said Tamara Seghers, Funeral Director for Fletcher Funeral Chapel.

Seghers reached out to Richard Tubman, vice president at Remco Memorials, who said, “we are primarily a monument company, but we are in the memory business. So when Tamara approached us, we were glad to team up (with Fletcher Funeral Chapel) on such an important project.”

“We get a lot of support from Weyburn and area for our regular business, so this idea was a no-brainer for us to be a part of this project,” added Tubman.

“People can sit and reflect on their times at these schools.”

He added that the benches are very durable to the elements. “They are made of solid granite, and are pinned and epoxied together. They will be here long after the next school is built, with little to no maintenance needed.”

The photos etched on the benches were taken by local photographer Jenelle Quigley of Beauti Photography.

Fletcher Funeral Chapel and Remco Memorials created the benches and they were installed at the new school with no cost to any of the three former School Community Council groups.
