WEYBURN – The Weyburn Legion Hall will be open for audiences to attend the Weyburn Communithon event in person on Friday, Oct. 28, including to see the many school groups throughout the day.
The Weyburn and Area Communithon 2022 will take place from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. The goal for 2022 is to raise $82,022 for the 10 member agencies.
The opening ceremonies will include the Legion Colour Guard, the singing of O Canada accompanied by a saxophone player, and Jean Fahlman will present her Communithon poem. The chair of Communithon, Korryn Kubashek, will make some brief remarks before they go right into the entertainment for the day.
“We’ll have lots of school performances, and I know they’re all excited to be coming,” said Kubashek, noting there will be lots of local talent in the late afternoon and evening. Unlike the past two years, there will only be one performance by video this year, from Weyburn-born singer Brayden King in the mid-afternoon, right after the school groups are done.
The morning will see choirs from Legacy Park Elementary and the Weyburn Comp, along with the senior band. After lunch, groups from St. Michael School will perform, then Assiniboia Park, including a choir featuring the entire Grade 1-6 student body.
One feature will be “A Step Back in Time”, featuring James Dionne and dancers from the Wheatland Seniors Centre, and dancers from the New Hope Dance Group.
A Halloween-themed feature is the Monster Mash, from 6:45 to 7 p.m., where children in costume are invited to come and dance for the TV cameras, said Kubashek.
“We try to cater to all age groups,” said Kubashek, noting the local talent will range from the very young to seniors to perform for Communithon.
A young band from Bengough, Radioactive Love, will help close out Communithon at the end of the evening, she added.
The member agencies include Big Brothers Big Sisters, Inclusion Weyburn, Canadian Mental Health Association, Southeast Advocates For Employment, Canadian National Institute for the Blind Foundation - Southeast Saskatchewan, Youth for Christ, Community Low Income Centre, Spinal Cord Injury Saskatchewan Inc., Envision Counselling and Support Centre and the Weyburn Care-A-Van Society.
There will be multiple ways for people to give to Communithon also, said Kubashek. The curbside donations worked well during the pandemic, so they are continuing to offer this, where people can pull up outside the Legion Hall, and someone will come out to take their donations.
People can also give in person when they come in to see the entertainment in the upper hall, or they can give online from the Communithon’s web page. In addition, there will be on-air donations from groups and businesses throughout the day.

“It’ll be nice to be back in full tilt. People are welcome to wear masks if they wish, and we will have hand sanitizer available,” said Kubashek.
She noted the Knights of Columbus will once again have their sausage and perogy supper at McKenna Hall, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, the Legion will have a build-a-burger night in the lower level during Communithon.
“We’ll have multiple volunteers who come out to help us put this on every year. We wouldn’t be able to do this without them,” said Kubashek.
In addition to the option of coming in person to the Legion to take in the entertainment, it will be broadcast live by AccessNow, and will also be available on the AccessNow app, and livestreamed on their web page at www.myaccess.ca/communithon
