WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 68 calls for service during the week of March 20 to 26, resulting in a total of 10 charges. All of the charges were traffic related, including eight under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA) and two under the City of Weyburn bylaws.
On Friday evening, members of the Weyburn Police Service conducted another high-visibility traffic enforcement project. Approximately 362 drivers were checked for sobriety and compliance with traffic safety laws and regulations, resulting in six drivers being issued a ticket and one driver receiving a three-day driver’s license suspension and vehicle impound after testing positive for the presence of cannabis. The Weyburn Police Service will be conducting several more traffic projects throughout the year.
An incident of property damage occurred late Sunday night as a deer made its way into a hotel lobby and crashed into a window and several room doors as it tried to escape. Officers attended and helped guide the deer back out safely, and no charges resulted.
A few acts of vandalism occurred during the week, and the Weyburn Police encourages anyone who witnesses or has knowledge of any mischief to property, or any criminal act, to contact the Weyburn Police and help identify those responsible. The recent acts of vandalism include spray painting private property and vehicles being “egged”.
The Weyburn Police received a RID (Report Impaired Drivers) call through 911 reporting an erratic driver who was swerving and failing to stop at stop signs. A vehicle description was provided and officers were able to locate the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop. The driver was found to be sober but inexperienced. Officers spoke to the driver regarding the complaint and warned them to drive safely and abide by all traffic laws.
Also on Friday evening, officers were notified of a resident who had wandered off from a care facility and had not returned. Officers located the resident and assisted getting her back to the care facility safe and sound.
The Weyburn Police Service also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
