WEYBURN – Weyburn residents who are supporters of the public school system may be going to the polling booths on September 28 to elect a new city representative for the South East Cornerstone Public School Division, as Melanie Sorensen submitted her resignation as a trustee.
The board of trustees accepted Melanie Sorensen’s resignation with “deep regret” on May 18 during their regular board meeting.
Sorensen, who has been on the board for the past six years, told the media it had been a privilege to serve on the board, and it had been a “fabulous learning opportunity and experience,” but due to increasing work requirements, she just couldn’t continue in the trustee’s role.
“You can bring less to the table and keep going, but that’s not my personality,” she said, following an informal meeting with fellow trustees and administrators prior to the official start of the afternoon business session.
She added that school board representation does call for a good deal of time to be dedicated to the tasks, and she just didn’t feel as if she would be able to continue to give the position the proper amount of time it deserved.
Shelley Toth, the business manager for the division and appointed returning officer, said the notice to nominate candidates will be issued in early August with the nomination deadline being Aug. 24.
If there is more than one nominee listed at the closing on Aug. 24, then the byelection will be held on Sept. 28.
The cities of Weyburn and Estevan are given two seats each on the South East Cornerstone Public School Division board. Weyburn’s other representative, who will continue in her role as one of the city’s representatives, is Norma Hewitt-Lendrum.
