WEYBURN – The Weyburn Wildlife Federation had a good day out on the lake at Mainprize Regional Park on Sunday afternoon for their second annual fish derby, with a total of 104 anglers taking part, 23 of those being youth.
“There wasn’t a pile of fish caught, but that could have been due to the weather change,” said organizer Troy Kincaid. “We had a total of six fish caught and all three species being weighed.”
The biggest pike was caught by Brendon Fisher with a weight of three pounds 3.4 ounces, and he also won the hidden weight prize.
The biggest perch was Murray Scott with a weight of 13.8 ounces.
The biggest walleye was caught by Jeremy L’Heureux, with a tiny weight of 10.5 ounces.
Kelly Gawel won the prize for the first fish caught.
No youth ended up catching any fish but organizers drew names out of a hat to split up the $300 youth pot.
Participants were from around the Weyburn region, plus some people drove over two hours to attend from north of Regina, as well as from Moosomin and Wawota areas.
“I’d like to thanks all the volunteers and for making this possible and to everyone that attended, and to the sponsors that donated door prizes,” said Kincaid. “All in all, we had a great day on the ice.”
The Wildlife Federation’s summer fishing tournament will be on June 17 out at Mainprize Regional Park.
