SOUTHEAST SASKATCHEWAN - Two of the top teams in the Big Six Hockey League delivered a terrific game Friday night in Carlyle.
The Carlyle Cougars held off the Moosomin Rangers 7-5. Ben Johnstone opened the scoring with less than eight minutes to play in the first period, and then Jesse Gabrielle took over with three goals in 2:12, including two in seven seconds for a 4-0 Carlyle lead after the first period.
Brett Turgeon scored midway through the second for a 5-0 Carlyle advantage, and then the Rangers' rally began. Devin McGonigal scored twice and Dawson Springer also scored in a 2:41 span to make it a 5-3 game through two periods, and Bud Holloway scored in the third to leave Moosomin down by one.
Gabrielle scored his fourth of the game to give the Cougars some breathing room, but Holloway scored a short time later to make it 6-5. Gabrielle finished the scoring with his fifth of the contest.
Gabrielle added an assist for a six-point game, while Dakota Rose had five assists for Carlyle and Johnstone had three helpers for a four-point game.
Levi Horn was the Moosomin goalie, while Cameron Pateman was Carlyle's netminder.
Carlyle and Redvers are tied for second in the league at 12-2-1, one point behind the first-place Redvers Rockets (13-2).
Also on Friday, the Carnduff Red Devils trounced the Wawota Flyers 9-2. Matthew Audette had three goals and two assists, while Ty Stovin (two goals, two assists) and Ben Hiltz (four assists) each had four-point games. Brandon Trask scored twice and Tanner Reynolds had the other goal. Mason Plews was in net.
Wyatt Nixon and Tyson Hislop scored for Wawota. Brendan Rinn was the Flyers' goalie.
The Bienfait Coalers doubled up the Midale Mustangs 6-3. Dylan Herzberg, Klae Bayda, Martin Druet, Tyler Hengen, Carson Cayer and Kaelan Holt scored for Bienfait.
Brayden Bjorndal had two goals for Midale and Steven Lindenbach also scored.
Jackson Walliser (Bienfait) and Talen King (Midale) were the goalies.
In Saturday's games, the Oxbow Huskies edged the Moosomin Rangers 4-3 in a shootout. Cody Davis scored twice for Oxbow and Kelby Widenmaier also scored for Oxbow.
Holloway had two goals for Moosoomin, while Dominic Orr and Jesh Elmes had Moosoimin's goals.
Kyler Beckett (Moosomin) and Cody Levesque (Oxbow) were the goalies.
The Wawota Flyers upset the Bienfait Coalers 7-4. Blake Rasumson had two goals for Wawota. Brady Dinwoodie, Parker Sweeting, Kaleb Rasmuson, Ashton Wilson and Ayden Lawless had Wawota's goals.
Taysen Holt scored twice for Bienfait, and Wyatt Garagan and Bayda had the other markers.
Zack Miller (Bienfait) and Kye Steinke (Wawota) were the goalies.
The Redvers Rockets scored seven times in the second period and pounded the Kipling-Windthorst Oil Kings 10-1. Kenton Miller (four goals and one assist), Jordon Miller (two goals and three assists) and Preston Kopeck (a goal and four assists) had five points each, and Blair Toms had four helpers. Colby Potapinski, Braeden Magotiaux and Bradey Fidierchuk also scored. Thomas Bauche was their goalie.
Austin Fleck was Kipling-Windthorst's goal scorer, and Zachary Barath was their goalie.
On Sunday night, Carnduff beat the Oil Kings 6-1. After a scoreless first period, Devin Stewart scored to give the Oil Kings a 1-0 lead.
Audette and Hiltz scored in the second period for Carnduff, and then Hiltz added two in the third to go along with goals by Branson Skuce and Strahn Douglas.
Cody Dumaine was in goal for Carnduff, while Dylan Dedecker was the Oil Kings' goalie.
Upcoming games will see Carlyle at Midale and Bienfait at Moosomin on Feb. 2. The following night, Bienfait will visit Moosomin, Oxbow is at Redvers, Wawota is at Kipling-Windthorst and Carnduff is at Midale. All those games are to start at 8 p.m.
Two games are set for Feb. 4: Oxbow at Wawota and Kipling-Windthorst at Carlyle. Those games are at 6 p.m.
