The head coach of the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs senior girls’ basketball team has been recognized at the provincial level.
Jessie Smoliak was saluted with the Saskatchewan Rattlers/Basketball Saskatchewan Inc. Community Coach of the Month Award for February.
“Based on the number of awesome nominations we received for her, the Bball community in Estevan know what a great person and coach she is, but we wanted the whole province to know as well,” Basketball Saskatchewan Inc. said in a Facebook post.
Smoliak, who hails from Fillmore, has been the head coach of the Elecs for 13 years, and has also coached in the community.
During her time in Estevan, she has guided the Elecs to provincials on multiple occasions, including the 4A girls provincial final at Hoopla in 2018.
The Elecs also host the Shoot for a Cure Victor Elias Memorial pink tournament, which has raised thousands of dollars for people in the community who have previously been diagnosed with cancer.
Basketball Saskatchewan and the Rattlers say it is important to celebrate deserving coaches that have made a difference. Each month one coach will win a prize pack put together by Basketball Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Rattlers.
