Local powerlifters compete in provincial championships

Many local lifters took the stage in the first in-person meet in Saskatchewan since January 2020.

WEYBURN - The Saskatchewan Powerlifting Provincial Championships were held this past weekend (October 1-3, 2021) in Moose Jaw. Many local lifters took the stage in the first in-person meet in Saskatchewan since January 2020.

To start off the weekend, Rhys Fowler competed in the Youth 1 35 kg division. His best squat was 36 kg, bench press was 21 kg, and deadlift was 53 kg for a total of 110 kg. He placed first in the Youth 1 division.

Heidi Fowler lifted in the Equipped bench only 84+ kg category. Her best bench press was 128 kg, which was a provincial record. She also won the award for best overall equipped bench only.

Marnel Spencer lifted in the Classic and Equipped divisions in the Master 2 47 kg category. For Classic lifting, her best squat was 88.5 kg, bench was 55.5 kg, and her final deadlift was 113 kg, for a total of 257 kg. Her squat, bench press and total were all national records.

In the equipped division, she squatted 117.5 kg, benched 69 kg and deadlifted 126 kg, for a total combined of 312.5 kg. Her squat, deadlift, and total were all national records here as well. Marnel also set numerous provincial records with her attempts.

Bree Hagen also lifted in both the Classic and Equipped divisions. She competed in the Sub-junior 76 kg class. In her Classic division she squatted 115 kg, benched 60 kg, and deadlifted 125 kg, totalling 300 kg. These were all national records.

In the equipped division Bree squatted 140 kg, benched 75 kg, and deadlifted 140 kg for a total of 355 kg. All of these attempts were also national records, including the total.

Calla Hrynewich lifted in the Classic sub-junior 69 kg class. Her best squat was 82.5 kg, bench was 45 kg, and deadlift was 95 kg, for a total of 222.5 kg. All of these lifts, including her total, were provincial and national records.

Natalie Butz lifted in the Classic sub-junior 84 kg class. Her best squat was 85 kg, best bench was 55.5 kg which was a provincial record. And she deadlifted 125 kg, for a total of 265.5 kg.

Katherine Balog lifted in the Classic sub-junior 76 kg class. She squatted 95 kg, and benched 58 kg which was a national record. She also deadlifted 118.5 kg for another national record, and a total of 271.5 kg. All of her attempts were also provincial records.

Kristin Balog competed in the Classic Master 1 84+ kg category. Her best squat was 115 kg, bench was 65 kg, and deadlift was 125 kg, for a total of 305 kg. She placed first in her category.

Charlene Cossar lifted in the Equipped Open 69 kg category. Her best squat was 170 kg, bench was 105.5 kg, and deadlift was 180 kg, for a total of 455.5 kg. She set a national record for the bench press and won best overall equipped lifter.

Franki Nault lifted in the Equipped Open 63 kg division. Her best squat was 140 kg, bench was 72.5 kg, and deadlift was 130 kg, for a total of 342.5 kg. She hit personal bests on her squat and bench press and placed first in her division.

Randy Schiller competed in the Equipped Master 2 105 kg division. His best squat was 220 kg, his best bench was 135 kg, and his best deadlift was 230 kg for a total of 585 kg. He placed first in his division.

Megan Roelfsema competed in the Classic Open 84+ kg division. Her best squat was 60 kg, bench was 55 kg and deadlift was 102.5 kg, for a total of 217.5 kg. All her lifts were personal bests.

Vicki Leas was also in the Classic Open 84+ kg division. She squattted 95 kg, benched 70 kg and deadlifted 130 kg, for a total of 295 kg. All her lifts were personal bests.

Michelle Hala also competed in the Classic Open 84+ kg division. She squat 120 kg, benched 87.5 kg, and dealifted 142.5 kg for a total of 350 kg. She also set personal bests on all of her lifts.

Chelsea Wahl lifted in the Classic Open 69 kg category. Her best squat was 115.5 kg, bench was 57.5 kg, and deadlift was 141.0 for a total of 314 kg. All of her attempts were provincial records as well.

Kyle Paterson  competed in the Classic Open 120 kg. He squatted 265 kg, benched 180 kg, and deadlifted 317.5 kg. His deadlift was a provincial record and personal best, and he also placed first in his category.

To cap off the weekend, the Olympia In Depth powerlifting team also went on to win the Best Overall team award for the third year in a row. It was a very successful meet under the guidance of OID coach Ryan Fowler, especially since it was the first official in person meet for nine of the team members.
