ESTEVAN - Many of Saskatchewan's top over-60 curlers are in Estevan for the master's men's and women's curling provincials at the Power Dodge Curling Centre.
Nine men's teams and six women's teams are entered.
Two local teams are entered in the men's event. The Bill Kapiczowski rink, playing out of the Estevan Curling Club, enjoyed a great start Thursday with a 2-0 record. They opened with an 8-5 win over Rod Quintin and 7-2 over Trent Walter. Other members of the Kapiczowski rink are lead Lawrence Hansen, second Ron Rittaler and third Gary Cheney.
The Walter rink, playing out of the Lampman Curling Club, also includes lead Gerald Clark, second Jim Brown and third Dave Wetsch. They also lost 10-5 to Maxwell Kirkpatrick.
Three draws were held in the men's event on Thursday, while the first women's draw was on Thursday afternoon. Draws for men and women will be Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The tournament has a round robin for men's and women's teams. The top four teams in each will advance to the playoffs on Sunday. Semifinals are Sunday at 9 a.m. and finals are at 2 p.m.
This marks the third time Estevan has tried to host the competition. The first, in March 2020, was called off midway through the evening draw on the first day as restrictions for the COVID-19 pandemic came into place.
Then the event was slated to occur in March, but it was shelved until this fall.
