Young Weyburn girl sets four provincial lifting records

Paige Wahl, eight years old, set four provincial records at her first weightlifting competition over the weekend.

WEYBURN – Paige Wahl of Weyburn attended the Saskatchewan Powerlifting Association’s “Last Chance” powerlifting meet in Moose Jaw on December 10.

Paige competed in the newer SPA Youth 1 division. You must be eight years old to compete, and Paige turned eight on Nov. 19.

Paige weighed in at 27.5 kg (60.5 lbs.), and finished the day with a 17 kg squat (37.4 lbs.), 11 kg bench press (24.2 lbs.) and a 27.5 kg deadlift (60.5 lbs.), totalling 55.5 kg (122.1 lbs.) which secured her four Saskatchewan Provincial records in the Youth 1 30 kg division.

Paige competes with her mom, Chelsea, and is coached through Bridgecity Barbell out of Saskatoon. Paige was very nervous to compete but encourages everyone to try hard things because you never know how strong you are.

Affiliated powerlifting gyms can be found on the SPA’s website. Locally in Weyburn there is Olympia in Depth, coached by Ryan Fowler, whose team includes other youth lifters.
