Kiefer Fever

Jennifer's Journal

That's right folks, today's the big day! The day that mega-star Kiefer Sutherland comes to the wee town of 'burn. And whether you were a big "Lost Boys" fan in the '80s like me and my sisters or are an avid "24" TV viewer of today, you were likely trying to catch a glimpse of this Hollywood actor in our city today.

I will admit I have "Kiefer fever." I caught it the moment I found out that the multimillion dollar-grossing thespian was coming to Weyburn for the unveiling of a bronze statue memorializing "the father of Medicare" and Kiefer's grandfather, Tommy Douglas.

I can't tell you how many times I had to reread that press release, certain that I was witnessing a profound typo. When the information finally sank in I loudly exclaimed, "What? Kiefer!"

Thanks to modern-day technology, it was mere seconds before I had alerted my sisters to the big news - one sister in Weyburn, the other in Belgium. The first sister pestered me the entire day with emails about Kiefer. The second, who will be unable to attend Weyburn during Kiefer's visit, was obviously too envious to discuss this momentous occasion and has said little about it.

We were not the only ones excited about Kiefer's visit. Stories have appeared in newspapers from coast to coast about the Canadian-born star coming to Weyburn - from the Vancouver Sun in the west to the Ottawa Citizen in the east and all points in between.

Kiefer may have been a heartthrob in the 1980s but his fan base has grown substantially over the years, mostly due to his starring role as Jack Bauer in the hit TV series "24" which ran for eight seasons. He is also gaining renewed popularity among young people for his role in the 1980s horror film "Lost Boys" which was the first teenage-craze vampire film. And we all know how today's generation feels about vampires!

I know this from first-hand experience. "Lost Boys" was my sisters and mines favourite movie growing-up. Now, decades later, the movie ranks among one of the favourite movies of my 14-year-old niece!

Kiefer has the kind of longevity that most actors can only dream of and popularity that spans generations. And he's HERE, in our city! I've been watching him on the screen for years and now I'll get to see him in real life... and he will get to see me! What am I going to wear?
