WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to 82 calls for service during the period of Feb. 5-11, resulting in a total of 19 charges. Of the charges, 15 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada and four under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA). Of the 15 criminal charges, five were in relation to individuals who either failed to comply with a condition of their release, or failed to appear in court as required.
Weyburn police responded to a train versus vehicle collision on Queen Street near Highway 39 shortly before 10 p.m. on Thursday. A vehicle travelling south on Queen Street, approaching the intersection with Highway 39 became stuck in the snow and icy road while crossing the railway tracks.
Timing was not in their favour as a train was approaching the intersection and the two occupants thankfully bailed out of the vehicle before impact. No injuries resulted. This matter is being investigated by the CPKC Rail police.
In the very early hours of Monday morning, officers responded to an alarm at a local business resulting in the arrest of an adult male. Officers discovered a window had been broken and some items had been stolen. Surveillance video, along with an item left at the scene by the culprit, led to the identity and arrest of an adult male who now faces charges of mischief to property, as well as breaking, entering, and committing theft.
Early Friday evening, two males from Manitoba, who had outstanding warrants for their arrest, called the RCMP to turn themselves in to police. Officers from the Weyburn Police Service responded and arrested both males, who were found to be in possession of a stolen vehicle, which was the reason for their outstanding warrants. The vehicle was seized and both males were charged and released with upcoming court dates.
Just past midnight on Tuesday, officers received a “RID” (Report Impaired Drivers) call from a person who witnessed an adult male who appeared to be intoxicated get in a vehicle and drive off. Officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle and conduct a traffic stop. The driver displayed signs of intoxication and further investigation resulted in the male being charged with impaired driving.
The Weyburn police also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s well-being, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals, parking, or other bylaw concerns.
