ASSINIBOIA — Assiniboia Curling Club is preparing to host a Canadian Championship in 2025. The home club hosting another big-ticket event is just another representation of the ongoing success stories experienced in curling in Saskatchewan.
Did you know in 2024 Assiniboia Curling Club members can claim a championship title? It might have been 44 years since Saskatchewan has won a Brier but a team from Saskatchewan, which included local curler, Tim Cobbe, captured top spot at an international bonspiel in Quebec.
Tim Cobbe lives in Limerick but has curled out of Assiniboia for the last dozen years. Cobbe, who has curled out of ACC for a dozen years or more, joined teammates Jim Wilcoch, Tim McMahon and Don Bzdel capturing top spot in an international bonspiel in Quebec.
As well, longtime ACHS teacher, Stan Marlin, was part of the B-side provincial winning team for the Saskatchewan Superannuated Teachers event.
2024 Saskatchewan curling success stories also included Regina hosting Montana’s Brier. Skyler Ackeerman was the youngest skip to win the Viterra Scotties. For the first time, a joint provincial event will be held at the same centre with Kindersley hosting both the Men’s Tankard and women’s provincial championships.
Saskatchewan wheelchair curling team captured back-to-back gold at the Canadian Championship, while Team Sask. captured the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Swift Current. Team Sherry Anderson was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame and the University of Regina Cougars were the USport Champions, earning them a trip to Italy in 2025, representing both Saskatchewan and Canada.
CurlSask has 115 member clubs across the province with 11,111 registered curlers. Saskatchewan declared 15 provincial championship teams, handing out 87 green jackets,
ACC tells curling enthusiasts to keep their calendars clear Jan. 30-Feb. 2 as in addition to league curling and bonspiel season, the club will play host to CurlSask Mixed Doubles Provincial Playoffs, where the last six teams have a chance to earn a spot in provincial championships.
